Straight From The Cellar Sierra Nevada Narwhal Beer Review

The Narwhal Imperial Stout from Sierra Nevada for me was smooth and silky dancing on that dangerous line as the 10.2% ABV was not as detectable as I thought it would be. Dark as can be and with notes of coffee and cocoa, this smooth yet syrupy feel ale brought a nice sweetness that was well balanced and just slid down my throat with a nice velvety feel. It was about halfway through the glass that I started to feel its warmth from the booziness, but even then, it still was not bothersome. This was a fine beer from Sierra Nevada indeed. Ohio On Tap App Users Go for Another Round

Entering second year, award-winning brewery finder app to offer new rewards for users.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The
Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA) will be giving loyal users of Ohio On Tap – the trade association’s mobile brewery finder and passport app – incentive to take another tour of the state’s craft breweries. On July 16, OCBA will roll out a new set of passport rewards for users who visit ten Ohio breweries or more. In the app’s first year, users could earn merchandise rewards for visiting 25, 50 and 100 breweries, and a special grand prize for visiting all breweries listed in the app.

Because of the rapid increase in the number of breweries in Ohio – over 60 opened in 2017 alone – OCBA has decided to award users who collect 150 stamps the current prize for visiting all participating breweries. That prize includes an OCBA Enthusiast membership, a hooded sweatshirt, insulated stainless steel growler and more. There will continue to be a prize for completing the entire passport, which currently consists of 180 breweries: winners will receive a personalized plaque, a set of limited edition T-shirts from OCBA events (Winter Warmer Fest, Six One Pour and Ale-O-Ween) and recognition on the
ohiocraftbeer.org website.

New this year is the addition of OCBA’s Drink Beer Made Here Ohio flag, a reward for Ohio On Tap users who collect 125 passport stamps. The flag has been displayed on stage by medal-winning Ohio breweries at the
Brewers Association’s World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival competitions. Users who visit ten breweries will receive a die-cut bumper sticker featuring the flag design. OCBA estimates that over 2,000 Ohio On Tap users will visit at least ten breweries over the course of the next year.

Over 17,000 craft beer lovers have downloaded the Ohio On Tap app to date. Users earn points by visiting participating Ohio craft breweries and getting virtual passport stamps within the app. Like many regional brewery passports, participants have one year to amass points and redeem them for prizes. Since Ohio On Tap was launched in May of 2017, 18 users have completed the passport.

Ohio On Tap earned an
Ohio Travel Association RUBY Award for best mobile app of 2017. The RUBY Awards, sponsored by Ohio Magazine, recognize outstanding achievements in marketing, advertising and public relations from Ohio’s travel industry each year. Awards are presented for excellence in more than a dozen different categories, reflecting the creativity involved with creating new communications strategies using various media.

Platform Beer Torrential Downpour Hazy IPA Beer Review

Torrential Downpour is a seasonal Hazy IPA from PlatformBeer initially based out of Cleveland, Ohio. 7.1% ABV and 34 IBU highlight this ale which is a Hazy IPA brewed with lactose sugar to provide a creamy and smooth mouthfeel which is coupled by the use of Citra and El Dorado Hops, as well as the use of strawberry puree to give it a fruit forward kick.

Personally, I found this beer to have a nice flavor to it and I was able to detect the strawberry notes and have to admit the overall creaminess was nice on this one. Juicy, fruity and smooth this one overall provided a nice experience. Other notes in the aroma and flavor that I came across to me were pineapple, orange, and grapefruit, which is not too surprising for this style. And. there was a good amount of bitterness and dryness that matched up well. For me, this beer was definitely worth the try and 4 out of 5 for my enjoyment. Golden Road Pico To Mexico Beer Review

Pico To Mexico from Golden Road Brewing is a 4.8% Lager highlighted by the ingredients of lime, cucumber and a hint of a habanero. In other words, a refreshing lager with a kick, and I think this ale did offer just that. Although the IBU level is only at 18, so bitterness is at a low. I found the beer to be light and clean with subtle flavors, and have a nice feel of subtle heat along with somewhat of a saltiness in the taste. There was also a little of what I would describe as a funkiness which most likely was from the yeast. Despite this, it was decent enough overall to make it an okay beer. Check out the video to see and hear more on this one.
