Samuel Adams Calls on Craft Breweries to Become Safer and More Inclusive Spaces for All

BOSTON, June 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- As Pride celebrations make a hopeful return, Samuel Adams is reinforcing its commitment to creating safe and inclusive spaces that bring people together to share a beer, celebrate Pride, and support the LGBTQ+ community.

Now more than ever, Samuel Adams recognizes the importance of implementing actionable resources for coworkers, drinkers, and LGBTQ+ community members at large, which is why the brewer is prioritizing inclusivity and taking its active allyship a step further. In partnership with GLAAD, Samuel Adams has identified, committed and signed the Safe Bars P.A.C.T. (Promise of Awareness, Compassion, and Trust) – a code of conduct for professional beverage organizations, trade associations, and non-professional beverage groups to sign and commit to – and is now calling on other craft breweries to do the same.

"Beer has a powerful way of bringing people together, and with that power comes responsibility. I believe craft brewers can play a critical role in providing safe and inclusive spaces for everyone to enjoy great beer, starting with our own taprooms and breweries," says Jim Koch, Samuel Adams Founder and Brewer. "Known for our revolutionary spirit, Samuel Adams is calling on craft breweries everywhere to join us in signing the Safe Bars P.A.C.T. so we can show our Pride everyday."

Samuel Adams will also donate $100,000 to Safe Bars* to further support the organization's P.A.C.T. initiative and training programs in bars and craft breweries nationwide, with the goal of creating welcoming spaces for guests and safe and respectful workplaces for staff.

"It's human nature to come together and celebrate. Everyone deserves to do that where they're safe, respected, and valued," says Lauren R. Taylor, Director of Safe Bars. "Safe Bars exists to train the hospitality industry in making nightlife safer and more inclusive, and we're thrilled to partner with Boston Beer and GLAAD to strengthen the craft beer community. Cheers to our diversity, and cheers to our pride."

Boston Beer Company, makers of Samuel Adams, has already begun implementing Safe Bars de-escalation and bystander trainings as part of the Safe Bars P.A.C.T. commitment across its local breweries and taprooms. With continued support from GLAAD and Safe Bars, Samuel Adams invites all drinkers, no matter who they are, who they love, or how they express themselves, to celebrate Pride in bars and on parade routes across the country.

"Gathering with community, laughing, dreaming, and enjoying a beer has the ability to change the world. As LGBTQ communities gather in safe spaces with our friends and allies, we recognize how our community has come through so much, with so much more work ahead of us," says Ross Murray, Vice President of the GLAAD Media Institute. "GLAAD is proud to join with Samuel Adams and Safe Bars to ensure that those gatherings are safe and welcoming."

FROM DALLAS TO MIAMI, BLACK TAP CRAFT BURGERS & BEER IS EXPANDING TO MAJOR U.S. CITIES IN 2022-23

With three new locations opening by 2023 in Dallas, Nashville, and Miami, Black Tap will continue to bring its award-winning burgers and world-famous CrazyShake®  milkshakes to iconic U.S. destinations

NEW YORK, May 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Globally acclaimed burger joint, Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer, owned by husband-and-wife duo Chris Barish and Julie Mulligan, is expanding within the United States, bringing their award-winning burgers and world famous CrazyShake® milkshakes to hungry fans in DallasNashville, and Miami. The new outposts bring Black Tap to 21 locations globally, which will have the restaurant's portfolio spanning six U.S. states and nine countries around the globe by early 2023.

"It's easy to be excited about these openings, all taking place in cities we have spent a lot of time in and fallen in love with," said Owner Chris Barish. "The decision of where to go next isn't a simple one though. We weigh many factors including where the current hot spots for growth are, what places are requested the most by our followers on social media and guests, and if we feel a genuine connection to the place. These cities hit all three."

Overseeing each location's design, Owner Julie Mulligan agrees, "The Dallas, Nashville and Miami markets are all seeing strong growth and have thriving restaurant scenes. We've spent hundreds of hours exploring each one to ensure we could bring something fresh to each city. We're looking forward to sharing the Black Tap experience—from our craft burgers and New York vibes to our original artwork and murals and DJ-curated beats."

Each location is currently under development, with openings slated for late 2022 and early 2023:

  • Making its debut in the Lonestar state, Black Tap will open in late 2022, joining Dallas' Victory Park, a booming neighborhood in between uptown and the city's industrial-chic design district. Black Tap Dallas joins a unique collection of restaurants and retail, public art, and a one-acre park, in this immersive area that is also home to the American Airlines Center.
  • Kicking up its heels in the land of country music, Black Tap will open its first Nashville location in late 2022. Located at 211 Commerce Street in the heart of downtown, Black Tap Nashville will be steps away from Broadway's infamous Honky Tonk Highway, the legendary Ryman Auditorium, and the Nashville Predators Bridgestone Arena.
  • Sunglasses in hand, Black Tap makes its Florida debut in 2023 at Brickell City Centre, Miami's increasingly popular modern neighborhood hub. Once thought of strictly as a financial district, Brickell is now a thriving destination for locals and tourists alike with a dynamic and year-round restaurant, shopping, entertainment, and arts scene just off the Miami River.

Black Tap started out as a 15-seat counter bar in New York's Soho neighborhood and now brings its downtown and hip NYC-inspired mixtape attitude to the global kitchen with multiple locations in NYC, the Vegas strip, Downtown Disney District® at Disneyland Resort, Bahrain, Singapore, Switzerland, and the UAE. With this U.S. expansion, each new location will draw on the brand's roots while featuring distinct art elements and collaborations that speak to what's unique in that locale. Menus will pair Black Tap favorites, like the most recent winner of New York City Wine & Food Festival's Burger Bash, the Wagyu Steakhouse Burger, and fan front-runner Korean BBQ Wings, with specials inspired by local flavors.

Bishop Cider has acquired two DFW breweries and is opening four new locations

DALLAS, May 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- TexBev, a beverage co-packing company owned by Bishop Cider, will relocate operations from Dallas to Wild Acre's Fort Worth facility and expand its capacity and capabilities with the addition of the equipment from Bishop's Dallas cidery and Legal Draft's Arlington brewery. At the Fort Worth site, there is ample room for continued expansion, as the property comprises nearly 200,000 square feet of warehouse space and sits on 21 acres. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of May. Bishop will also be opening a one-of-a-kind entertainment concept at the site and details will be revealed in the fall.

Wild Acre beer will continue to be produced at the facility, but the brand will be getting a refresh, investments will be made in QA/QC equipment, and recipes will be fine-tuned. "Rightfully so, Wild Acre has gained a lot of respect in Fort Worth. They have built a very impressive facility and the beer can hold its own against other local breweries, but I believe there is potential to compete on a larger stage," says Joel Malone, CEO of Bishop Cider. Grant Wood is coming alongside the new management team to ensure the liquid is world class. Grant Wood was most recently the Co-Founder and Brewmaster of Revolver Brewing, prior to the acquisition by Molson Coors in 2016. Previously, Grant spent 16 years at Boston Beer Company, finishing there as the Senior Brewing Manager.

Bishop currently operates three locations of its Cidercade concept (Dallas, Austin, and Houston). Cidercade has dozens of taps of Bishop Cider, serves artisan food, and offers an "entertainment buffet" where patrons pay a nominal admission fee and the games and activities are free to play.

Construction is currently underway on Cidercade Fort Worth, located just south of downtown. It will be the largest Cidercade to date at 25,000 square feet and is expected to open by the end of summer.

Bishop acquired Legal Draft's assets for the equipment, as new equipment lead-times have grown exponentially in recent years. Bishop did not assume their liabilities and will not market beer bearing the Legal Draft brand. Bishop will, however, be opening a Cidercade location at the Arlington property around the end of the year, bringing the total number of Bishop's locations to seven.

Bishop has also decided to relocate and drastically expand Cidercade Dallas, but it will remain open at its current location until construction has been completed at the new site. At 79,000 square feet, the new location is nearly 10 times larger. It will feature concepts, games, and activities that aren't offered anywhere else in Texas. The opening date has not been announced.

BUSINESS OVERVIEW

When Bishop Cider started in Dallas' Bishop Arts District a decade ago, Joel Malone and Laura Malone (husband and wife Co-Founders) owned a quaint 700 square foot cider bar, but Bishop has now grown into a leader in beverage manufacturing and beverage experiences.

Their business now comprises three brands:

  1. TexBev provides beverage co-packing services for its clients with a focus on specialized processes such as tunnel pasteurization, hot fill, and retort sterilization. TexBev is a co-packer of canned cold brew coffee, tea, juice, energy drinks, wine, beer, and RTDs.
  2. Cidercade has dozens of taps of Bishop Cider, serves artisan food, and offers an "entertainment buffet" where patrons pay a nominal admission fee and the games and activities are free to play.
  3. Bishop Cider, the company's house brand of hard cider, is currently sold and distributed in Texas, Oklahoma, and select states in the northeast.

Once the new locations come online, Bishop Cider will operate over 300,000 square feet of real estate, have seven on-premise locations, and employ approximately 265 employees (currently 140). Bishop has averaged over 100% revenue growth YOY, sustained profitability even in 2020 when entertainment venues were closed due to the pandemic, and welcomed nearly one million customers through Cidercade locations in 2021.

Urban Artifact Release World’s Most Expensive Alcohol

Cincinnati, OH
 – Urban Artifact didn't set out to create the world’s most expensive (and fruitiest) fermented beverage, but that is exactly what they have done with Astronaut Food Blackberry & Blueberry.

“We love to explore, to pursue our creativity in innovative ways and reward the curious drinker,” says Bret Kollmann Baker, one of the brewery’s co-owners, “we’ve brewed beers with Yellow Mombin, an exotic fruit that only grows in the Amazon Rainforest; with Durian, the world’s stinkiest fruit; and the previously illegal purple-hulled Mangosteen.” These fruits command a high price, but none cost more than fruit that has been freeze-dried.

Enter Astronaut Food, a Fruit Tart made with over 1,000 lbs of freeze-dried blackberries and blueberries. It takes roughly 11 pounds of fresh fruit to produce one pound of freeze-dried fruit, which creates the high price tag. The resulting fruit-dense Fruit Tart clocks in at an out-of-this-world cost of over $1,111 per barrel; and that’s just in ingredients. The average beer costs around $75 per barrel, wine is approximately $100. Even most spirits are around $500 per barrel after distillation.

“When we first came up with the idea for Astronaut Food, it wasn't about the price. Our best ideas come from separating ourselves from constraints, and, in doing so, the question became how we could possibly fit more fruit in a can,” Kollmann Baker continues, “we realized that the limitation wasn't in the amount of fruit we could buy. It was because there’s too much water in fresh fruit.” Their answer became instantly clear: remove the water, and you can add a lot more fruit than before.

With this epiphany, the brewery set out to source and make the world’s fruitiest, and most expensive, fermented beverage in the world— Astronaut Food. The Freeze-Dried Fruit Tart is intense, packing more fruit per drop than any other beverage in the world. It also comes in at an astounding 15% ABV due to the high sugar content of the fruit. Urban Artifact ferments that sugar out into a balanced, tart product that showcases the real fruit.

“One thing we’ve always believed,” Scotty Hunter, the brewery’s CFO, adds, “is that great drinks don't need to be greatly expensive for you to enjoy. We could have easily charged $100 per 4-pack or more, but at the end of the day we want more people to enjoy our Fruit Tarts. At only $30 for a four pack of eight-ounce cans, it’s a hell of a deal. Our Fruit Tarts are designed to reward the curious and to cost no more than they need to.”

Urban Artifact’s newest batch of Blackberry Blueberry Astronaut Food Blackberry & Blueberry is available starting on Monday May 23, 2022. It will be available at the brewery's Northside taproom, on their online store, and in select retailers.
