Ohio Breweries Give From the Heart

Statewide collaboration beer to benefit non-profit advocates for the brewing industry.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – 70 Ohio breweries are gearing up to celebrate
American Craft Beer Week next month with a special statewide collaboration brew. From the Heart is a fundraising beer to benefit the Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA), the non-profit trade organization working to promote and protect the state’s craft beer industry.

OCBA counts nearly three-quarters of Ohio’s 366 independently-owned craft breweries among its membership, ranging from large, urban brewers like
Rhinegeist in Cincinnati, to breweries in smaller communities like The Phoenix Brewing Company in Mansfield and Ill Mannered Brewing in Powell.

“Without the OCBA we would have been in a much more challenging position during the pandemic,” said Tom Ayers, co-owner of Ill Mannered Brewing. “They were invaluable in ensuring we could reach our customers safely and efficiently by helping to get added service space and delivery options approved at the state level.”

Since its establishment in 2007, OCBA has primarily funded its mission with funds derived from membership dues and large-scale beer festivals. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, OCBA was forced to cancel Columbus Craft Beer Week and the associated Six One Pour beer festival in both 2020 and 2021, as well as the 2020 Ale-O-Ween festival in Dayton and the 2021 Winter Warmer Fest in Cleveland. The loss of more than a year of event revenue has dramatically impacted OCBA’s operating budget.

“What better way to give back to an organization that has tirelessly supported craft beer throughout the entire pandemic than by participating in the From the Heart collaboration,” said Carmone McFarlane, co-owner of The Phoenix Brewing Company. “We are excited to work with members from every part of the brewing industry, which not only survived the pandemic but is growing because of the efforts of the OCBA.”

The From the Heart fundraiser was made possible through the generous support of OCBA allied business members Blue Label PackagingCrosby HopsGreat Western MaltingLemon Grenade CreativeOrigin Malt and White Labs, who donated ingredients and packaging materials for the project. Breweries participating in the collaboration purchased the donated ingredients from the organization and brewed a variation on an IPA/pale ale recipe developed by OCBA board members John Haggerty of Warped Wing Brewing and Mark Hunger of Great Lakes Brewing Company. The name “From the Heart” – coined by Krista Alvarado of 4KD Crick Brewery in Defiance – was chosen out of dozens of suggestions from OCBA members.

OCBA is led by a volunteer board of 11 brewery owners and employees from around the state, as well as two full-time staffers: executive director Mary MacDonald and deputy director Justin Hemminger. This small team provides a wide range of member services, including legislative advocacy at the Ohio Statehouse, brewery marketing through programs like the Ohio On Tap passport app, technical and educational conferences and seminars, and community-building connections between breweries and the businesses that support the industry.

“OCBA is a fantastic resource for Ohio breweries and Rhinegeist is pleased to participate in the From the Heart collaboration as a way to say ‘thank you!” said Chris Shields, director of education at Rhinegeist. “Mary, Justin and the board members kept breweries informed and educated on the constant stream of updates and opportunities during the pandemic and have continued to find creative ways to show love to Ohio beer.”

From the Heart will be available on draft at participating brewery taprooms for American Craft Beer Week, May 10-16, 2021. A number of the breweries plan to package the beer for limited distribution as well. More info is available online at ohiocraftbeer.org/fromtheheart

Ohio Ranks Fifth in Craft Beer Production

Despite Volume Losses, Ohio Ranks Fifth in Craft Beer Production

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a year which saw craft beer production decline by 9% nationally, Ohio breweries maintained their collective position as one of the top craft beer manufacturing states. The Brewers Association (BA) released new statistics this week breaking down 2020 craft beer production and sales by state. Ohio moved up one position to fifth in overall craft beer production, despite an 11% decline in volume caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Rhinegeist Brewery in Cincinnati and BrewDog USA in Canal Winchester all appeared on the BA’s list of top 50 craft breweries by sales volume for 2020. Those three breweries, plus the Samuel Adams production brewery in Cincinnati, produce just over two-thirds of Ohio’s craft beer by volume.

The craft brewing industry suffered its first production volume decline on the national level in the modern craft beer era. Pandemic closures of bars and restaurants caused draft beer sales to fall more than 40% in 2020, contributing to the loss in production volume as well as a 22% drop in retail dollar value in the market.

“Breweries are still recovering from the disastrous effects of the ongoing pandemic,” said Mary MacDonald, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA). “We’re happy that Ohio is still ranked among the nationwide leaders in craft beer production, but our industry needs continued support both from consumers and from our elected officials in order to rebound. The immediate future of the craft brewing industry and other hospitality-focused industries is dependent on the success of public health measures around COVID-19.”

Positively, the total number of breweries both nationwide and in the state reached an all-time high at the end of 2020. There are currently 366 independently owned craft breweries operating in Ohio. 47 breweries opened last year, despite the supreme challenge of starting a new business during the pandemic. The rate of brewery closings stayed consistent with previous years, in keeping with the nationwide trend. 73 breweries are known to be in-planning and expected to open to the public within the next few years.

Ohio breweries were responsible for more than 8,300 jobs before the pandemic and contributed just under $1 billion in impact to the state economy. OCBA has commissioned a study to measure 2020 economic impact at the state and regional level that will be published later this year.

Warped Wing Brewing Company And Pizza Bandit Collaborate On 420 Beer And Pizza

DAYTON, OH (April 7, 2021) – On Tuesday, April 20th at 4:20pm, Warped Wing Brewing Co. and Pizza Bandit will be releasing their new collaboration beer & pizza - “Panama Red.” Why on 4/20 at 4:20, you ask? We’ll let you figure that one out.

“The beer idea really came from eating pizza with James, Brian, and Erin and trying to figure out what flavors we could do with the Pizza Bandit in regard to food and then what that might mean for the beer,” said John Haggerty, Brewmaster and Managing Partner at Warped Wing. "So, the pizza really came first and was inspired by our new Smokery out in Springboro. Of course, I love smoked beer as well, so it was sort of a no-brainer for me to do a smoked beer for this project. As far as brewing with Pizza Bandit was concerned, James came down and we spent 2 days working together. I really didn't know James before that but definitely a cool dude and can certainly handle his beer (and hot wort w/scotch at 9am!)  Anyway, it was a very enjoyable experience and I look forward to pairing the pie and the beer together.” Coming in at 5.3% ABV and 15 IBU, Panama Red Smoked Red Lager has a mild caramel sweetness and is smoky in aroma, with a crisp finish.

Warped Wing’s GM and resident “culinary dude,” Erin O’Neill, worked with Pizza Bandit’s James Burton and Brian Johnson on developing a recipe that we felt not only represented the brewery but would also pair deliciously with a beer - and the Panama Red pizza was born. Panama Red is made with Pizza Bandit red sauce and cheese, with smoked brisket, smoked pulled pork, deep-fried smoked pork belly, Peppadew peppers, diced spicy pickles, and topped with Warped Wing’s housemade root beer barbecue sauce. From one culinary dude to another, Erin is excited for the unique opportunity to collaborate with other foodies in the Dayton area.

Copy on the Pizza Bandit exclusive bottle reads: “Hops and cannabis. Cousins. Buds. And Panama Red? Well, that’s an old-school cannabis classic. Settle into da couch with a Panama Red Smoked Red Lager. Toke the smoke and pair this burnout of a beer with a fresh slice of ‘za. Say, man, you got a Panama Red? It’d be a lot cooler if you did.”

Join us on Tuesday, April 20th at 4:20pm for the release of Panama Red Smoked Red Lager at both Taproom locations (downtown Dayton & Springboro) as well as Yellow Cab Tavern. The first 24 pours of Panama Red beginning at 4:20 at the breweries will receive a complimentary slice of Pizza Bandit’s Panama Red pizza! Also tapping at downtown Dayton area bars and restaurants beginning 4/20. Bottles (375ml) of Panama Red will be available exclusively at Yellow Cab Tavern on 4/20.

Warped Wing Brewing Co. is a Dayton craft brewery inspired by Ohio’s rich history of innovation and invention. We are committed to carrying that spirit forward by brewing new proprietary beer styles along with original interpretations.
